Oscar Piastri had to go through a rollercoaster of events before finally landing a seat in Formula 1. The driver was a part of the Alpine Junior academy before making his move to McLaren. With a new team comes new surroundings and new people to work with. Till now, it seems like Piastri has gotten a hang of things. The Aussie driver is going to be paired up against a F1 veteran after all.

Oscar Piastri is more than qualified to have a place in F1 having won both the F3 and F2 championships. After Fernando Alonso left Alpine, the team announced Piastri as their driver without consulting with him. Oscar denied that he had joined the F1 team which created a lot of drama. The Aussie was originally going to sign with McLaren before a court case came upon him.

In an interesting turn of events, Oscar Piastri and McLaren won the court case which let to the Aussie replacing outgoing driver Daniel Ricciardo. This let the driver focus on his 2023 debut season with the team. There have been many comparisons between the 2023 McLaren duo as they will be facing each other off for the first time. They say your teammate is the one that you have to beat before anything else in F1.

Oscar Piastri is excited to start his journey with McLaren

In an interview with GPblog, here is what he had to say. “I haven’t really asked him for advice yet and we haven’t spent that much time together. Just some of the marketing activities here at McLaren. But you know, I think between the other people in the team, my engineers and stuff like that there’s a wealth of experience there with rookie drivers and obviously Lando’s, came through as a rookie with McLaren. So there’s a lot of people in the team that have shared that journey with him, which is encouraging for me,” he said.

“As a teammate, especially in F1, the first comparison is your teammate because we’re in the same car. That would definitely be the comparison there, of course. Our relationship has been good so far. I don’t see why that would change. I think we’ll get along well and try and push the team forward together, because that’s ultimately what we what we want to try and do, we want to try and be back to winning races. So that’s the main aim and there’ll be the comparisons with teammates,” Piastri concluded.

Oscar Piastri has impressed many in the paddock already. With Lando Norris being put up against the young Aussie, it will be interesting to see who prevails in this teammate battle between the two. McLaren is aiming to win races and compete with the top teams in the coming years. However, with Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull looking in top form for the upcoming season, it’s not looking good for the boys in Orange.
