Former F1 driver explains ‘genius tricks’ on the Red Bull RB-19

Red Bull Racing set the benchmark with a dominant RB18 in 2022. Subsequently, all eyes were on the Austrian team for this season as the paddock looked to see the new innovations made by Adrian Newey’s aero team. Interestingly, The Milton-Keynes team has managed to reduce the weight of its 2023 challenger. The RB19 raised eyebrows as it crossed the pitlane for the first time during pre-season testing.
Former F1 driver, Giedo Van Der Garde informed viewers on ViaPlay about Red Bull’s new advancements. The Dutchman stated, “Red Bull has also been working on getting the weight of the car down.” Interestingly, the former Caterham driver pointed out the lack of paint or decals in the middle of the RB19 as well as under the side pods. Giedo continued, “And what you see is a whole piece of carbon all the way to the side pods. That part has not been sprayed or pasted.”
Additionally, the 37-year-old enlightened the viewers about the weight saving from this lack of paint. Van Der Garde explained, “This saves you half a kilo to a whole kilo in weight.” Giedo further described the energy drinks team’s advancements in the aero department. Adrian Newey is often considered one of the best designers in F1 history, and his magic continues on the RB19.
Red Bull continues to be the benchmark on the F1 grid
The former Sauber reserve dug deep into the airflow of the RB-19. Van Der Garde elaborated, “We know that at Red Bull, it’s all about the flow among the side pods. And they’ve made that very narrow there to use the floor. And the flow as much as possible.” The 37-year-old was surprised to see some rather radical concepts adopted by Red Bull which the Dutchman witnessed for the first time in his career.
Giedo said, “They have a number of nice tricks on the floor. And I have never seen anything like this before.” Subsequently, Van Der Garde discussed the two flaps on the car’s floor. The Dutchman mentioned this as an innovative design and acknowledged Red Bull’s efforts. He concluded, “But to be honest, I think this is unique and genius to see. And you can immediately see that they are doing well again.” It seems that Max Verstappen has another title winner in his hands.
From the eyes of a Former F1 driver, Red Bull has done it once again. The Austrian team has worked on an already dominant car and enhanced it for this season. Christian Horner would certainly be excited about the team’s performances this year. At the same time, its rivals look closely at the new ideas in an attempt to mimic these designs on their own cars.
