Former F1 engineer reckons “there is a possibility” Mercedes gets “second place in the Constructors’ Championship”

Right at the beginning of the current Formula 1 2022 Championship, Mercedes came out with a car that could hardly put up a competition to its title rivals–Ferrari and Red Bull. To the huge disappointment of the Silver Arrows fans, the Mercedes W13 lacked pace and performance and thus, even seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton could not break into the top 5 in the Bahrain GP, as Haas racer Kevin Magnussen claimed P5 in the race. But since then, Mercedes have come a long way and now that thirteen races are over in this season, the Stuttgart-based outfit have cemented themselves in the third position and are giving quite a fight to Ferrari for capturing P2 in the Constructors’ Championship table.

While the German team faced troubles with race pace and could never truly crack the solution to porpoising, their reliability game has been on point throughout the season. At times, when the Red Bull racers had to pull out due to engine issues and the Ferrari drivers DNF’ed citing car problems, Mercedes took advantage and put themselves up on the podium. Due to this steady performance by the team, former Formula 1 engineer Marc Priestly believes that the eight-time Constructors’ Championship-winning team still has it in them to win P2 in this year’s title race.

As a veteran F1 engineer, Marc Priestley had been observing Mercedes’ performance carefully at every race. He believes the team has vastly improved, given their upsetting results at the start of the season. Now, in the last race before the F1 summer break at Hungaroring, Mercedes got their first double podium of this season, with Lewis Hamilton in P2 and George Russell in the third spot. Currently in the third position in the points table, Mercedes is lagging behind Ferrari by only 30 points, and Priestly believes they still have a chance to bridge the gap and go past the Scuderia to secure themselves a second-spot finish at the end of this season.

Speaking of the current performances put up by Mercedes, Marc Priestly said there is a great chance that Toto Wolff’s team might pull through and secure P2 in this year’s Championship battle. He said, “If Mercedes can continue this form, there’s a possibility they could actually take second place in the Constructors’ Championship.”

Priestly also talked about Mercedes’ day at Hungaroring where they got their most significant results with a double podium for Hamilton and Russell. He said, “I think it was quite an important day for Lewis Hamilton to sort of re-stamp his authority after all the hype that surrounded George Russell.
