From pilots to secret agents: F1 drivers reveal what non-Formula One jobs they would have chosen

Formula 1 is regarded all around the world as one of the most dangerous sports to exist, and the F1 racers who take part in it have claimed themselves to be massive adrenaline junkies time and again. While most other jobs require people to have some passion for the work they do, F1 runs purely on drive. If the racers do not find the drive to pursue a career in motorsports, they should never enter such a dangerous business in the first place. But what if they never came into F1–what other jobs would Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, and the others do?

In a recent interview for the Formula 1 YouTube page, most of the racers were called in to answer a simple question–where they saw themselves working had they never come into F1. And the answers ranged from pilot to chef. Amongst all of the Formula 1 drivers, the award for the most creative answer would have gone to Nico Hulkenberg as the newly-appointed Haas racer said he might have been an undercover agent.

F1 is the pinnacle of motor racing, and the drivers who get a seat amongst the twenty available spots in this elite sport, have to train night and day to be able to get to these coveted standards. Most of them start training from as early as three years of age, driving go-karts, and then they race in the junior leagues before getting the ticket to race in F1. And for making one racer into an F1 driver, several sponsors back them as well. But now, the racers have answered what other jobs they might have taken up if their F1 dreams never worked out.

When the F1 drivers were asked where they would see themselves outside of F1, Yuki Tsunoda was quick to answer, “A chef!” He even chimed in about his dream of earning a Michelin star to become the youngest Michelin-star rated chef in the world. And when George Russell was asked the same question, he went on to explain how he had to make a tough choice between F1 and football. He said, “It was either football or racing because the dates clashed. And my dad was like, you need to make a decision now. And at the age of seven, fortunately, I think I chose the right path.”

Lando Norris said he is interested in becoming a golfer now, and Lewis Hamilton mused that he would have been in a band if not for F1. When it was Nyck deVries’ turn, he gave the same answer as Alex Albon and Charles Leclerc–all three of them believe they would have been architects. Pierre Gasly mentioned his desire to be a designer, and Sergio Perez said he would have made a great sports manager. Then, Valtteri Bottas said he would have been an ice hockey player and Fernando Alonso said he would have become a cyclist for Your de France. Lastly, Max Verstappen said he would have tried MotoGP if Formula 1 did not work out, and if that did not work out, he would have gone into a managerial role.
