George Russell and Lewis Hamilton were involved in an unfortunate collision on lap one of the Qatar GP. Hamilton’s back wheel clipped onto Russell’s front left tire when the #44 car tried overtaking his teammate and pole sitter Max Verstappen on the inside lane. This rendered Lewis Hamilton a DNF and caused Russell to drop to the 18th position after an amazing start at P2.
Lewis Hamilton publicly apologized after the race and took accountability for the crash. He says, “Massive apology to everyone back at the factory; it was just probably a racing incident.” And he admitted that he should be blamed for the crash as Russell had nowhere to move. He said, “I take full responsibility for it; I don’t think George had anywhere to go.”
After the race, when Russell was asked about the incident and Lewis’ apology, as reported by silverarrows.net, he said, “We both have so much respect for one another. We will go past this, and I’m sure we will speak, and everything will be OK.” He also said, “Obviously, nothing was intentional both ways.” The Englishman also openly appreciated Hamilton’s apology and said, “I definitely appreciate him apologizing; I was gutted because of the result for the team.”
Lewis Hamilton was racing on soft tires, which inevitably allowed him to gain a faster pace at the start. Russell was on a comparatively slower strategy with mediums. The team claims they communicated about these conditions and turned one before the race. But it didn’t go the way they envisioned.

What does Ferrari vs. Mercedes look like for the remainder of the season?
Russell, after the race, said that they wanted to finish second in the constructor’s championship and hold onto that position. He said, “We have one goal, and that is to finish second in the constructors’ championship.”
Russell also claimed that their fight was not with each other but with Ferrari: “The fight wasn’t with each other; the fight is with Ferrari.” Says Russell.
After Carlos Sainz didn’t race in the recent race due to fuel tank issues in his car, Charles Leclerc, the only racer for Ferrari this week, finished a place below Russell at fifth. Currently, Mercedes is leading Ferrari by a mere 28 points, and it seems that they need to step up their game to hold onto the second position in the championship down the road.
