The British GP witnessed a thrilling contest for second and third places. The two McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri seemed set to secure a double podium for the Woking-based team before Lewis Hamilton managed to overtake the latter under the safety car. Hamilton’s teammate George Russell wanted to see Piastri on the podium.
The 25-year-old was amazed by the pace of McLaren over the British GP weekend. Russell stated that Oscar Piastri was the one who should’ve been on the final podium spot for the Australian’s incredible performance. He said, “I feel for Oscar because he was driving very well and I’ve been impressed by what he has been doing this year. He is a deserving podium finisher.”
This is an indirect way for George Russell to indirect dig at his teammate. The 25-year-old believed Lewis Hamilton did not deserve to stand on the podium. Certainly, many would be interpreting Russell’s comments in this manner which could make things difficult for the Silver Arrows back at Brackley.

George Russell remains impressed by McLaren’s pace at Silverstone

Russell was surprised to find the Woking-based team right in the mix at the British GP. Although, the 25-year-old suggested that a different tire strategy could have further propelled Norris and Piastri’s prospects in the race. He stated, “It was impressive what they done. I also though with the strategy they did the wrong strategy… they could’ve been so far ahead.”
The Mercedes driver hoped that the Silverstone weekend was a one-off for McLaren. Despite Lando Norris‘s result in Austria last weekend. Russell believed the British GP remained a positive race for the Silver Arrows as the team was stronger than rivals such as Ferrari and Aston Martin. The 25-year-old said, “In the end, it was a relatively good weekend for us.”
Thus, George Russell believes Oscar Piastri deserved to get his first F1 podium at Silverstone. Lewis Hamilton passed the Australian driver under a safety car which meant that Piastri had to stay content with fourth place. Although, Hamilton would not be thrilled by the comments made by his teammate after the race.
