The Englishman’s contract with Mercedes expires at the end of 2023 and will need to look for a new team if he doesn’t renew

Guenther Steiner warns Lewis Hamilton, claims F1 title contenders won’t sign him if he ditches Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton, 7-time World Champion, is one of the greatest ever to grace the pinnacle of motorsport. He has raced for the likes of McLaren and Mercedes and has won everything possible. The veteran is statistically the most decorated driver of all time and has dominated motorsport with the likes of the Silver Arrows and his family in Formula One since he joined them in 2013.

The Englishman’s contract with the team is nearing its climax, however, leaving him in need of evaluating his future options should a renewal with Mercedes not occur. When asked about Hamilton potentially partnering with Max Verstappen at Red Bull by Mail Plus, Haas team principal Guenther Steiner gave his opinion. He said, “It would be entertaining!  But when you are the principal or when you’re running a team, you don’t want to entertain you guys. You want to entertain yourself of being world champion. I’m not doubting Lewis’ capability but I just say, I don’t see it because the people which have the other top three cars are not looking at Lewis.”

Steiner’s response is substantiated by the fact that Red Bull has Sergio Perez tied down until 2024, and Max Verstappen until 2028. As for Ferrari, their drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are secured for at least until the end of 2024. Aston Martin, who have discovered an upward trajectory, won’t replace leader Fernando Alonso, or their owner’s son Lance Stroll. Thus, the big three teams apart from Mercedes, have already secured themselves for the future, implying that should Hamilton leave, top teams are not an option for him.

Lewis Hamilton is a seven-time Formula One world champion and one of the greatest drivers in the sport’s history. He began his F1 career in 2007 with McLaren and quickly became a rising star, winning the championship in his second season. In 2013, he moved to Mercedes and helped turn the team into a dominant force, winning six more titles in the following years. Hamilton has also become a global icon thanks to his success both on and off the track, and his achievements have cemented his legacy as one of the all-time greats of F1.

He has currently achieved 103 wins(most), 192 podiums(most), 103 pole positions(most), and 61 fastest laps. The veteran also lays claim to accumulating 4443.5 points over the course of his career, an astonishing statistic. However, he is now 38 years of age, and the climax of his career is fast approaching. With Mercedes lacking since 2022, Hamilton has not won a race in over 500 days. This could leave him questioning his chances of winning another title with the team, granted he won’t be in the sport for much longer.

Should he choose to renew with Mercedes, it would take the team finally getting themselves on par with Red Bull and building a car strong enough for Hamilton to challenge them with. This scenario would make an 8th title a possibility for him. However, should he choose to leave the Silver Arrows, hopes of winning another title are in jeopardy, seeing as the other top three teams on the grid have set their driver lineups for the foreseeable future. Hamilton is also not at the stage of his career where he can guide a midfield team to the top.

Hence, Lewis Hamilton has a big decision regarding his future in F1. He can either keep his faith in Mercedes and fight for a title, leave them for a midfield team to see out the rest of his career, or retire altogether is a high possibility. Mercedes’ performances throughout the 2023 season will greatly influence his decision on his future.
