German fan-favorite Guenther Steiner has been team principal for the Haas F1 team ever since its inception in 2014. Throughout a predominantly period where the team has been backmarkers, Steiner has maintained his position, determined to help the section improve. He is passionate about how he runs Haas.
In an interview with Mirror Sport, the German was inquired about the prospect of taking on the head role at Ferrari, should the opportunity present itself. He said, “No! What I would love to do is make Haas win! That is the desire I have, which is bigger than going into a team that is winning and just being an administrator of it. I am a Haas man – I don’t know for life, but for the foreseeable.”
He continued, “The passion comes from the idea I had to make the team. I didn’t have the money and still don’t, but I found Mr Haas who had the passion and had the money to do it. And he let us do it. If you found something, I think you’re more attached to it than when you’re called in to be the administrator for a period of time. It’s a difference – even if the team isn’t mine, it’s still my brainchild.”
Under the leadership of team principal Steiner, the team has experienced a surge in popularity in recent years. Despite not actively seeking the spotlight, Steiner has garnered a dedicated following and earned a cult status among fans of the sport.

Being Ferrari’s customer team makes development difficult for Haas, according to Guenther Steiner
Like other teams, Haas must develop its chassis and bodywork independently. However, within the regulations’ boundaries, the American-owned team procures several mechanical components from Ferrari, which directly influence the car’s overall design, aerodynamic concept, and systems such as the gearbox, rear suspension, and cooling.
As a result, Haas is inevitably compelled to align with Ferrari’s overall aerodynamic approach, given their reliance on various mechanical components from the Italian manufacturer. Since Ferrari has been struggling throughout the year, their lack of performance carries forward onto Haas, which could explain their woes. Steiner elaborated on this to Motorsport.com.
Steiner acknowledged that the team is currently exploring alternative concepts. However, he emphasized that, for now, there are no immediate plans to make any drastic changes. “You always try, and we are trying different concepts, but you cannot jump completely to what Red Bull is doing,” he said. This is attributed to being held back by Ferrari.
“Because you’ve got your chassis, your cooling installation, your radiator installation, so you cannot jump. You try to do more going that way,” he continued. Steiner emphasized the complexity of implementing significant changes during the ongoing season, highlighting the challenges in making such modifications. Haas are intent on making it back to the midfield after torrid years of being the slowest, and Steiner is determined to ensure the team achieves it under his guidance.
