“He can be a good racing driver in a permanent seat,” Toto Wolff sees endless potential in Mick Schumacher

As the son of the legendary seven-time World Championship winner Michael Schumacher, life in Formula 1 is already considerably difficult for Mick Schumacher as he has to put up with the expectations of all the fans. And in his debut with Haas, the 2020 F2 World Champion was expected to create a giant splash but he could not even set off a tide. Nick’s unimpressived scores in the 2021 and 2022 season led to Haas discontinuing their deal with him, and taking up Nico Hulkenberg instead.

Now, Hulkenberg is all-set to come out of his F1 exile to take Mick’s place in the American team while Mick does not have any regular racing seat at one of the Formula 1 teams for the upcoming season. But that has not held back his career in the king class of motorsports as one of the top 3 teams on the grid–Mercedes–have acquired Mick Schumacher as their new reserve driver. And the young racer hopes to learn new tactics from his time at the German outfit, so that he can utilise those lessons once he get back to regular racing in the future seasons.

Speaking of Mick Schumacher’s potential and his chances of going back to the racing grid as a regular driver, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff gave some positive remarks. He said Mick’s time at the Stuttgart-based outfit can take him places just like Nyck De Vries‘ did since the Dutchman had served as the Mercedes reserve driver alongside Stoffel Vandoorne.

Toto Wolff says Mick Schumacher needs a “safe environment to develop”

Mick Schumacher and Toto

Mick Schumacher is the scion of one of the most famous families in the field of motorsports, and indeed, his talent and education is a good fit for Formula 1. But Mick’s absence from the 2023 grid does not mean he will never make it back, according to Toto Wolff.

The Mercedes chief said Mick’s career night follow the same trajectory as Nyck De Vries’ did. He said, “I believe if we can give him (Mick) a safe environment to further develop, he can be a good racing driver in a permanent seat in the future. In the same way we have let Nyck de Vries go in order for him to achieve a career, that could be something that could happen to Mick, whether it is in our team or letting him go somewhere else, we don’t know at [this] stage.

In the upcoming season, Mick Schumacher will not return to the F1 racing grid in a regular role, but he will be spotted during the practices for sure. In fact, he might also have to fill in for one of the drivers at Mercedes should they choose to skip a race weekend because of health reasons or personal problems. All these would provide Mick an opportunity to showcase his skills so that a prospective team might take notice and think of hiring him for the future seasons.
