“He can be trusted in good times and bad”: Kevin Magnussen commends Guenther Steiner’s honesty
Kevin Magnussen
Danish racer Kevin Magnussen has had one of the most interesting careers in Formula 1–not because of winning too many Grands Prix or suffering a massive crash–but because of his time at Haas. He had started out in F1 with McLaren, and after two years at the Woking-based outfit, he decided to make a move to Renault. But the French team refused to give him a multi-year contract, so he kept on looking for other options in the same year.
Upon entry into Haas with a multi-year deal with the American team, Kevin Magnussen descended on a journey to perform to the best of his abilities while partnering French racer Romain Grosjean. But in 2020, Kevin Magnussen got the notice that the team would be dropping him, and Guenther Steiner was the one who gave him the news in a straight-forward way, without beating around the bush.
Recalling those days when Kevin Magnussen finally found out that he was being let off by Haas, the 29-year-old went over the difficult time that he faced after exiting from F1 in 2019. Magnussen even took a dig at Renault by saying their Executives sugarcoated their words , and said he appreciated Guenther Steiner’s blunt way of stating things with utmost honesty.

“I’ll never forget when they told me…”: Kevin Magnussen talked about being denied a seat at Haas in 2020
At Haas, Kevin Magnussen claims to have gotten a level of honesty from his Team Boss Guenther Steiner that he lacked at Renault, his former team. According to the Danish racer, “Guenther is very honest. He can be trusted in good times and bad. I’ll never forget when they told me they didn’t have a seat for me after 2020, he was extremely open and honest about the big picture.”
He also said, “Back in the Renault days they would say ‘No, no problem’ and everything, and I would see the agents and the fathers of other drivers coming to see the team up and go ‘Hey, I know what’s going on, so why don’t you tell me so I can predict something else?‘”
Ultimately, Kevin Magnussen got a call back from Steiner following Nikita Mazepin’s dismissal from Haas amidst the Ukraine-Russia war. Magnussen’s comeback at the Bahrain Grand Prix was a grand event as he managed to put his Haas at P5 in the season opener, surpassing both Mercedes. Till now, he has scored in five of the races, and has put Haas above Williams and AlphaTauri in the Constructors’ Championship standings.
