“He has acted as my older brother”: Nyck De Vries thanks Max Verstappen for always supporting him on his path towards becoming a Formula 1 driver

After winning the 2019 Formula 2 Championship, Dutch racer Nyck de Vries had a successful stint as a driver in Formula E by claiming the World Championship title in their 2020-’21 season. Later, he signed up as a reserve driver for Mercedes, and he has now been signed by Scuderia AlphaTauri to become their full-time F1 driver as Yuki Tsunoda’s partner. And on this entire journey, de Vries had credited fellow countryman Max Verstappen for always being by his side.

The 27-year-old racer, who is all-set to debut in Formula One in the upcoming 2023 Championship season, has a lot to prove as he got the coveted AlphaTauri seat by beating several potential choices. Nyck de Vries sat down for an interview with Racer to discuss his preparation for the start of his F1 career and how current World Champion Max Verstappen has helped him on the way to achieve the spot where he is today.

De Vries also mentioned how he could not enter F1 due to a lack of seats in the teams, despite his illustrious performances in the other racing classes. But Max had always pushed him to try harder, and finally, de Vries has got the AlphaTauri contract in his hands.

When Nyck de Vries was asked about his dynamics with the only other Ducth racer on the current F1 grid, Max Verstappen, the former FormulaE racer only had nice words to say about the Red Bull driver. Speaking on this, de Vries said, “Max and I have a great relationship. We respect each other a lot. He is a world champion … the best in our sport at the moment. Even though he’s younger, it feels like he has acted as my older brother.

On many occasions, Nyck has been spotted having dinner with Max Verstappen, so it can be said without a doubt that the two have a friendship that will take both of them a long way in F1. de Vries got his first taste of F1 racing recently in the Italian Grand Prix as he filled in for Alex Albon in Williams after the Thai racer had to be admitted to a hospital due to an appendicitis scare.

Grateful to be debuting in F1 in 2023, Nyck stressed that his move to AlphaTauri became a reality after the team executives saw his performance in Monza where he scored two points for Williams.
