The qualifying session at Baku made Alex Albon rage out at Fernando Alonso following events that took place at turn 15 at the end of Q1. Following Lance Stroll’s crash and a red flag, there was not much time left for the drivers to set their final laptimes with their final flying laps as the checkered flag was waved the moment all the drivers crossed the line. This final flying laps made most of the drivers improve their times and qualify into Q2, but at the same time, Fernando Alonso was seen driving way too slowly than the cars in front of him.

Because of Alonso’s slow drive, Alexander Albon, and the cars behind him had their laptimes ruined, and as another incident, Alonso went out in Turn 15 – intentionally or not, is a mystery – and that made Albon brake hard, losing precious time. At this, he went furious over the radio; “He needs to get penalised, this guy (Alonso), he has to. This is ridiculous. He was doing it the whole lap. He was driving slowly on purpose and then it was so obvious. How he went off the track was ridiculous,” he said, as PlanetF1 quotes. “He braked so early and then he just went off the circuit.”

Former F1 driver Mark Webber had his comments to share on the same incident, as he thinks that this was not a right move by the Alpine driver.

Whether what Alonso did was on purpose or not, but that move certainly made it easier for him to get into Q2 as other drivers weren’t able to set proper laps. Looking at Albon’s rage, Mark Webber said that if something has provoked someone as calm as Albon, then there has to be something serious. “Albon’s not normally vocal so that was genuine frustration for him, as strong as I’ve ever heard him on the radio about someone. In terms of the hierarchy, that’s a pretty big shot from him against Fernando,” he said.

He also stated that Alonso can be unpredictable, and “still has a habit of meddling every now and again,” referring to the incident.

Alonso going wide into turn 15 was strange as Albon stated that he started to brake early and still went off, but at the same time there were issues about his breaks overheating. Although the team had said that his brakes were cool enough by that time, it still remains a question whether he did it on purpose or not.
