‘He took Formula 1 more seriously,’ Pierre Gasly on Yuki Tsunoda changing his approach for the 2022 F1 season

AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda

Yuki Tsunoda was partnered alongside Pierre Gasly for the 2021 season but had to go through a very unpredictable season with many highs and lows. There were multiple crashes along with incidents that he was a part of which weren’t his fault. The Japanese driver clearly had a few problems in adjusting and getting the gist of Formula 1.

Yuki Tsunoda admitted earlier during the year that he did not know much of what he was doing during his rookie year in Formula 1. Last year the Japanese driver was still learning about the aspects of the sport. This year, he has been performing much more consistently . Pierre Gasly says that he has seen his teammate progress a lot in his second season compared to his first.

The main reason behind Yuki Tsunoda’s improvement is his change of approach according to Pierre Gasly. The Japanese driver is making much less mistakes and is more mature now. Gasly went on to elaborate on how the situation has changed at AlphaTauri with Yuki being more dependable now and out of his rookie shell.

“I think now he took  probably Formula 1 a bit more seriously, which was the right approach to have. From what he says, I did have an impact on that side to show him the sort of dedication and commitment that this sport required. I think this year, we’ve been working as a team, where last year it was kind of a little bit divided, because we didn’t have much experience. He was still quite new to the sport,” he said.

“This year I think he’s got clear ideas and clearer feedback on what we actually need to go faster, so we can work together to improve the package that we have.Like with anyone in any sort of difficult or technical exercise, or even like exam revision, practice makes perfect. More things are clicking now that he’s understanding things. He’s also forming better opinions of what he wants on the car. And that takes time, with any driver,” he continued.

Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda are one of the best pairings on the grid right now. They get along very well and have now seemed to take a stride in helping the team move forward.
