“He was faster than Max Verstappen,” Emerson Fittipaldi praises Sergio Perez for an utterly dominant display in Monaco
Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen at the Monaco GP
Sergio Perez has been a terrific for Red Bull and Christian Horner ever since he joined the team back in 2020. The Mexican was brought in to play second fiddle to the reigning world champion, Max Verstappen and that’s exactly what he did last year. Perez played a huge role in Max Verstappen winning his first world champion as he kept the seven time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, at bay for Max Verstappen to come back in the title decider.
But, this has been the year where he has started to show his ability in a competitive race car. Perez has shown us that he can match Max Verstappen stride for stride when it comes to pace on the track. He was unlucky in Jeddah with the safety car coming out at the wrong time potentially costing him the win. But he hasn’t let that affect him and has continued to chip away at valuable points.
Although, Sergio had given us glimpses of what he can do but his performance in Monaco has helped him stamp the authority on his title credentials. The Mexican had his share of luck during the Grand Prix but he did get the business done when he was supposed to. He was put under immense pressure by Carlos Sainz but Perez negotiated it brilliantly and emerged as the ‘Master of Monaco’.
Sergio Perez got the better off Max Verstappen in his first Monaco GP, according to Emerson Fittipaldi
Emerson Fittipaldi has been impressed with how Sergio Perez outperformed Max Verstappen at the Monaco GP. He said, “He deserved to be there. He was there because of his speed. He was faster than Max (Verstappen) in qualifying and he drove fast in the race.”
“I want to congratulate Checo Perez, because this weekend he was the ‘Master of Monaco’. He won the race under enormous pressure and didn’t make a single mistake.”
“We only have one driver from Latin America in F1, where there used to be five or six. Now we all count on Perez and he did a great job,” as reported by gpblog.
Sergio Perez has exceeded expectations of a lot of people and we are not even half way through. He can be the dark horse and definitely has the potential to emerge as a title contender.
