Helmut Marko ascribes Red Bull’s success to Max Verstappen: “He’s unbelievable”
Max Verstappen and Helmut Marko
2021 saw the rise of Max Verstappen to the summit, as he dethroned the seven time world champion to win his maiden title and end an era of Mercedes’ dominance. The German manufacturer had won eight consecutive constructor’s championship to go with their eight consecutive driver’s championship. It looked next to impossible for anyone to break their monopoly but Max Verstappen was able to achieve the impossible.
The reigning world champion hasn’t looked back from that point as continues to deliver the goods week in and week out. Despite two DNFs in the first three races, the Dutchman leads the championship by 46 points from his team mate, Sergio Perez, after 9 rounds. Max has been able to overturn a 46 points deficit into a 46 points lead in a matter of 6 races, which is absolutely mind-boggling even from his standards.
Max already has 6 wins this season with the last one coming in Canada. Life was made easier for him as his arch rival, Charles Leclerc, was handed a 10 place grid penalty as he used the 4th turbo for the season. But he had Carlos Sainz for company in the last few laps on his fresh set of tyres. The Dutchman kept his head and didn’t crumble despite immense pressure from the Spaniard, showcasing his talent yet again.

Max Verstappen lauded by Helmut Marko after yet another brilliant performance in Canada
Helmut Marko has hailed Max Verstappen for yet another spectacular performance and believes huge portion of Red Bull’s success is down to Max. He said, “He [Verstappen] started at a young age, which is necessary for Formula 1. For example, in the go-karts when it rains in Italy; on half the tracks everyone goes to the cafeteria to wait for the weather to clear.“
“But Verstappen had to keep driving with stiff fingers until he reached the absolute top in the rain. You saw the result in Canada in qualifying, where he was really fast and drove away from everyone.”
“There is Verstappen’s craft, which for a 24-year-old is really incredible. You saw in Canada that under the highest pressure he still doesn’t make a mistake.”
Max Verstappen has been highly influential in whatever Red Bull has wanted to achieve and therefore it’s completely understandable as to why Helmut Marko and Christian Horner rate him so highly.
