“Drive to Survive” is a popular documentary series that provides an inside look into the world of F1. Produced by Netflix, the series offers an exclusive behind-the-scenes perspective on the intense competition, drama, and personal stories of the drivers, teams, and key figures in the F1 paddock. The series has gained significant popularity among motorsport enthusiasts and newcomers, offering a captivating portrayal of F1. However, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko disapproves of it.
Speaking to Motorsport-Magazin, Marko elaborated, “Viewership in Formula 1 is increasing dramatically. We’re talking about a 20 percent increase in ratings. Some may know the Netflix series, but this has nothing to do with reality. It has created a breakthrough for Formula 1 in America and as long as the viewership and interest is there, you can debate whether it makes sense or is necessary.”
Drive to Survive has faced its fair share of controversy and scrutiny, as Mercedes and Ferrari initially declined to participate in the show. This decision opened the door for Red Bull to take the spotlight and emerge as a prominent presence in the paddock for the series. Initially deemed a great success, it now faces constant criticism for its portrayal of events.
Drive to Survive has faced intense criticism on multiple instances for its narration of events
DTS has faced criticism for its approach and portrayal of certain events in the F1 world. Some instances where the series has been criticized. This includes selective storytelling, where critics argue that the show tends to focus more on sensationalized narratives and dramatic moments, sometimes neglecting to provide a comprehensive and balanced view of the sport.
Max Verstappen revealed in 2021 that he would not participate in that season’s edition. The Dutchman expressed his reservations, stating that the program makers would fabricate many aspects based on his experiences contributing to previous seasons. Verstappen explained that the show had manufactured certain rivalries that, in reality, did not exist. He emphasized his preference for factual and authentic events rather than being part of a dramatic show.
Verstappen expressed his concerns about how he would be portrayed, stating that the program makers can manipulate his image to fit their desired narrative. According to him, regardless of what he says, they would attempt to depict him as reckless or mold his character to suit the series’ storyline. He emphasized his preference for more direct and personal interviews, where he can have one-on-one conversations with individuals who genuinely want to understand him.
In 2022, Carlos Sainz scrutinized the fabricated rivalry portrayed between he and his former teammate Lando Norris. He mentioned that the show exaggerated the rivalry, which he believes is not true, and acknowledged that fans are aware of this. Sainz expressed confidence in the production team’s ability to recognize their mistake and not repeat it in future seasons. With these direct call-outs, DTS must tread carefully on their productions or risk serious repercussions.
