“He’s really bigger than the sport”: Fans react to Guenther Steiner getting flocked for autographs at Japan’s Nagoya Station

Guenther Steiner
The ever-expanding popularity of Formula 1 is quite evident by the way the once-reclusive, elitist sport, has now become an international sensation, with fantastic Grands Prix being held at various locations all around the globe. And the drivers, who make up a giant part of the pinnacle of motorsports, get to enjoy a celebrity status that has turned them into household names in various parts of the world. And alongwith the racers, the Team Principals have also come into spotlight now–such as Haas F1 Racing Team Principal Guenther Steiner.
While Haas is the only American racing team in the grid, Guenther Steiner’s popularity stems from something entirely different from the sport that he is involved in. The Italian engineer started off his career in motorsports with the role of a mechanic in the World Rally Championship, and several years later, he found himself in the Jaguar Racing Team, and ultimately Red Bull, before settling at his leading position at Haas. But despite all this, his biggest claim to fame is his appearance on the popular Netflix docuseries ‘Drive to Survive’.
‘Drive to Survive’ turned into a hugely popular show that made F1 into an overnight worldwide phenomenon. And Guenther Steiner, thanks to his quick temper and famous catchphrases, became a sensation as DTS extensively covered his outbursts right from its first season on Netflix, whenever Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen failed to impress Steiner.
Fans react to Guenther Steiner’s impromptu autograph session with fans at a Japanese railway station

Following the Japanese Grand Prix where the Haas drivers failed to score any points with unimpressive race finishes, Guenther Steiner made way to the railway station to get a train to Tokyo. But he was completely flocked by a massive number of fans who wanted his autograph. Reddit users reacted to a photo of the Haas Team Principal interacting with the followers in Japan–
Thus, some users did bring up the fact that Guenther Steiner’s extensive appearance on DTS was a chief reason why he is so popular amongst the fans now. But Guenther had previously said that he was not concerned by his newfound popularity post the release of Drive to Survive, as he was always focused on how to do his job of leading his team in a better manner.
