“I don’t think we’ll ever have the quickest car”: George Russell rules out a Mercedes race win this season

When the 2022 Formula 1 season started off, all the Mercedes fans were in for massive disappointment as the Silver Arrows came up with a car–the W13–which could, in no way, compete with the RB-18 of Red Bull and the F1-75 of Ferrari. Even though Mercedes have maintained their position at the top of the points table for the Constructors’ Championship for eight consecutive years, the Stuttgart-based team fell through in their quest to build the best car of this season, and they also could not find a solution to porpoising.

But now that twelve races have already taken place in 2022 and we are left with ten more to go before the Champions of this season are announced, Mercedes have shown huge improvement from their initial form. In the last race before the summer break kicked off in the Hungarian Grand Prix, Mercedes landed their first double podium of the season with Lewis Hamilton in second spot and George Russell in P3. But still, the young Briton who debuted with Mercedes this year, bears doubts in his mind and thinks that Mercedes will never have the fastest car in the 2022line-up, despite its recent improvements.

Being the debutant racer at one of the foremost teams in Formula 1, George Russell has lived up to the expectations of the F1 followers and given them quite a few podium finishes in this season. But when he was asked if he thinks his team might turn the tables on Red Bull and Ferrari, and get back to the top spot in the Championship standings with the fastest car on the grid, the Briton said he does not believe so.

While discussing his thoughts on Mercedes’ recent improvements and where the team might stand at the end of this year, George Russell said, “We’re definitely closing that gap, there’s no doubt, but the four cars ahead of us certainly have the pace advantage. There’s no doubt about that. But I think, as a team, we’re slowly closing the gap. Hopefully after the summer break, we’ll add some extra things to the car, but as does everybody, so it’s not going to be straightforward.

He also said, “We still believe we can probably fight for victories at some point this season. But I don’t think we’ll probably ever have the car that will be outright quickest.
