For the Scuderia Ferrari, things have not been looking up lately because of the upsetting performance of their F1-75 in last week’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. With the early retirement of Carlos Sain from the race due to some hydraulic issues, the team was already having a bad day in Baku, but the worst news they could have received, came in the form of Charles Leclerc‘s car, which started giving up smoke towards the middle of the race.

Charles Leclerc had to retire from the race as well, and ultimately, Ferrari’s both drivers could not finish their Azerbaijan GP run because of the mechanical issues with their car. After all these troubles with the car that was initially touted to be the car to watch out for when Ferrari outperformed both Red Bull and Mercedes in the season opener in Bahrain, the Scuderia have decided to investigate on why they have fallen down the ranks in the latest Grands Prix.

In the Azerbaijan GP, the Ferrari engineers added a new rear wing component which improved their car’s straightline speed when compared to Red Bull’s RB-18.

Mattia Binotto has recently revealed that the new rear wings, which they added to Charles Leclerc’s car for experimental purposes to check whether they reduce the speed gap between them and Red Bull, have proven to be successful. The new components have increased Ferrari’s straightline speed, which was necessary for the extensive straights in the Baku City Circuit. Seeing the pace that they have provided, the Ferrari Tean Principal is hopeful that they can further use those new rear wings in the races where they will need them.

Speaking on the improvements that the team noted on their car due to the recently added components, Mattia Binotto said, “I think on that type of level of downforce I don’t think we’ve got such a big disadvantage to Red Bull, the speeds were very similar.

He further said, “Both with DRS on, in the quali we saw it yesterday, and with the DRS off today, that was good enough at least to be in the fight, keep Max behind on the straight and defending. So overall I think yes that rear wing is working as expected.
