Yuki Tsunoda and Nyck De Vries started their 2023 F1 campaign as teammates at AlphaTauri. However, just 10 races passed and the Italian squad have decided to drop the Dutchman from the squad. While the whole atmosphere had been rather bizarre, Yuki’s recent comments on his former teammate seem to bring yet another perspective to the whole situation.
Nyck De Vries has been an experienced and accomplished driver in other categories of motorsport that he has participated in. The Dutchman is known for winning in Formula 2 and also becoming an FE world champion with Mercedes. Sadly, his F1 stint has come to a premature end after the British GP. His performance in the Williams Car while subbing for Alex Albon was what had gotten him his dream gig. Having not even completed half a season, the Dutchman has been replaced.
Ahead of the 2023 Hungarian GP, Yuki Tsunoda had some intriguing comments to share about his former teammate. The Japanese racer compared Nyck with Three time F1 world champion Nikki Lauda. The 2013 movie ‘Rush’ pinpointed Lauda’s qualities including his eye for detail and his feedback. Yuki felt that Nyck De Vries had similar abilities during his time with the team.
Here is what Yuki had to say about De Vries in an interview. “I never seen a driver like that, he is saying really specific [things], describing each detail, which are easy to understand. And yeah, it’s really specific,” he said. “And I can tell like why he had such successful results in the past. It’s those places, which was probably a bit of limitation for me, that I have to go a step forward,” he continued.
Yuki Tsunoda shares another example of Nyck De Vries’s abilities
“What I got impressed by most was the last day in the Abu Dhabi test. He drove our car and he described how the front wing behaves through the corner, and he was saying almost spot-on, kind of in entry how much the front wing deflected through the corner, and that kind of flexion was making our car like this behaviour,” the Japanese racing driver went on to say.
While it seems like Nyck De Vries knew what he was doing, the decision to sack him seemed rather uncanny. After the announcement, the Dutchman was spotted meeting up with Toto Wolff in Monaco. While it looks unlikely, Nyck could still get a shot back in the pinnacle of motorsport. However, the possibility of it happening in the next few years seems a bit unlikely. On the other hand, Daniel Ricciardo seems to be getting a grip of the AlphaTauri having already out qualified Yuki Tsunoda on his first outing back with Red Bull.
