Only a few days into the month-long Formula 1 summer break, the drivers’ market talks became more and more interesting. And then, Fernando Alonso surprised everyone by announcing his move to Aston Martin to take Sebastian Vettel’s seat beside Lance Stroll. Vettel will be retiring at the end of this year from Formula 1 as a whole, and Aston Martin decided to replace the former World Champion with another World Champion–Alonso. But despite several attempts at guessing who would get Vettel’s seat, fans had never thought Aston Martin would take Alonso.

The 42-year-old Spaniard has made it clear that he believes he can still win the third Championship title, and for that, he must have a title-worthy car. Alonso spent 2021 and 2022 with Alpine, and although he is repeatedly securing top 5 or top 6 finishes, he is not satisfied with his pace at Alpine. Thus, he jumped at the Aston Martin offer in hopes that the British team will help him close in on a third World Championship title. Former F1 racer Pedro de la Rosa attempted to dissect Alonso’s intent behind his move to Aston Martin, and he supports the Spaniard’s choice completely.

When Sebastian Vettel had announced his exit from Aston Martin and, in fact, F1, at the end of this year, fans engaged in extensive talks about who would become the racer to take the German’s spot in his team. Names like Oscar Piastri, Mick Schumacher, etc. had come multiple times, especially since Sebastian had a say in which racer they should choose and everybody knows the German has a special corner for Michael Schumacher’s son, Mick.

But when it was announced that they had offered Vettel’s seat to Fernando Alonso, and he had accepted it, the F1 World was shaken by the news. But Pedro de la Rosa believes it was the best move as Lawrence Stroll’s team is currently attracting new investment and is projecting to be one of the most ambitious teams in the grid, and with Alonso driving for them, Aston Martin can go places in 2023.

In de la Rosa’s opinion, “The most important thing for a driver is to be part of a winning project, sooner or later. Aston Martin’s investment and ambition show that.”

He also said, “I really like this marriage [between Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin], because it is going in the right direction.”
