Carlos Sainz had a pretty lonely race in 3rd place but it didn’t come as easy as it seemed. The Spaniard’s weekend didn’t get to the best of starts after he suffered a nasty shunt in Friday practice. Sainz lost the rear going coming out of Turn 13 and collided into the wall which ruled him out of FP3. The car was heavily damaged and the driver also had picked up some minor injuries.

But, fortunately, he was able to take part in Qualifying and was able to make amends for his costly error. Carlos Sainz was able to outqualify the reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, who himself made an error during qualifying. But, the Spaniard was yet again outqualified by his team mate and championship leader, Charles Leclerc. But, nevertheless, it was a more than decent qualifying session for him.

We expected Carlos Sainz to fight it out with Charles Leclerc but Max Verstappen had other ideas. The Dutchman wasted no time in getting past his ex team mate as he moved up into 2nd place. From then on it was Carlos Sainz fighting it out with Sergio Perez and trying to hold on to that podium place. After Sergio Perez himself faced a technical problem, it was just down to Carlos Sainz keeping his focus to the checkered flag.

But, Carlos Sainz revealed that he had to fight through a minor niggle in demanding conditions. The Spaniard, in his post race interview, said, “I’ve been better. Obviously, after the crash from Friday I still had a bit of a neck pain going into the race, but I had to manage it and I fought through it.”

“Especially with Checo on the end on the medium tyre, it was very difficult to keep him behind, but we managed to keep the podium, which is a decent result.”

“But in the end, we got what we deserved I think, which is a decent P3, and we can build it up from here. I want more but it’s not bad,” as reported by motorsport.

Mattia Binotto can be happy with both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz’s results but he cannot be fully satisfied after being defeated by Max Verstappen for the second race in a row.
