Fernando Alonso is one of the oldest faces on the grid as of now. Since he made his F1 debut in 2001, he has managed to compete with legends like Michael Schumacher, and even win the World Championship over him, twice, with Renault, in 2005 and 2006. After that till now, he is regarded as one of the best in the sport, and even at the age of 41, he challenges the best on the grid right now after making his return with Alpine last year, his teammate, Esteban Ocon even stated that he is there to win another World Championship.
To have more wins and to actually win his third World Championship, Alonso would have to be in a car that is developed enough to challenge the top grid sitters right now, which are Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes, but his recent actions say otherwise.
The Spaniard announced that he will be moving to Aston Martin for the 2023 season, which is questionable because the team hasn’t won a single race so far.
Looking at his actions, Damon Hill, who himself retired from the sport long back, believes that soon the time would come for the double World Champion as well.
Damon Hill states Fernando Alonso “is firing all cylinders”
Hill compared Alonso to his father; “I always had it in my mind that racing drivers should stop before they’re 40,” GPblog quotes him; “I think possibly because my dad kept racing until he was 45. And I remember journalists saying “you know he really ought to stop now, it’s looking a bit sad and long in the tooth and stuff,” he added.
Hill also compared him to Juan Manuel Fangio, who started racing when he was 38, he believes that Fernando is still “firing all cylinders,” and is just fine racing as of now, but soon, he would have to retire.
