Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team boss, is frustrated with the W14 concept. The team wants to make changes as soon as possible. Wolff wants to provide his drivers with a competitive car and does not mind if the new concept mimics Red Bull’s RB19. Gone are the days when other teams imitated Mercedes. In 2020, during Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 team’s domination, Racing Point imitated Mercedes due to their success, and the internet trolled them with the name “Pink Mercedes.”
After the qualifying session in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Toto Wolff admitted that the W14’s design was flawed. It was proven wrong by the success of its rivals. The team will make changes to the car in the upcoming races. Wolff made a shocking claim stating he would not have shame if the W14 looked like RB19. He wants the car to be quick, and that is his only priority.
“We have no dogmatism of how the car should look like. It just needs to be the quickest possible race car. If that looks like a Red Bull, I don’t care. It just needs to be quick. I will have no shame if it’s quick”, stated the Austrian billionaire. Mercedes will consider changing all aspects of the car, not just the sidepods. “It is all the aerodynamic surfaces that are visible from the leading edge all the way to the diffuser and the beam wing.”

Toto Wolff is hell-bent on producing a competitive car
“There are massive amounts on the floor, obviously, with a ground effect car. And then there are many more architectural things that are necessary in order to give it the bodywork that you think is most efficient. So literally the car is being turned upside-down at the moment and there’s a lot of good that we see.” Toto Wolff is ready to make the necessary changes to close the gap with the team’s rivals.
George Russell weighed in on this subject. He feels that Mercedes might have been too aggressive with its 2022 design. The team is all over the place. There is unrest within the Mercedes garage. Last week, the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton stated his team made a mistake with its car concept. The W14 looks different from its rivals. It is not as broad as Ferrari or Red Bull, for example, not to mention the side pods.
The team has hit the ceiling. They are restless. Mercedes will do whatever it takes to get back in front again. The question is how long it will take. Lewis Hamilton’s contract expires at the end of the year, and he has not signed a new one yet. There are a lot of doubts and uncertainty regarding his future with Mercedes. The clock is ticking, and the team is running out of time.
