“I’m incredibly disappointed”: Charles Leclerc reacts to yet another frustrating result at the British GP
Charles Leclerc
We had one of the best British GP in a long time, just not for Charles Leclerc, who felt his race was destroyed by some bizarre decisions by Ferrari. It’s for the second time this season that the Monegasque driver has to pay for his team’s mistakes. After Max Verstappen fell at back of the leading pack, it was between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to figure out between themselves. Ferrari decided not to prioritize any driver, despite Charles evidently having more pace than Carlos.
Since Lewis Hamilton was clocking some serious lap times and closing in on the pair, it was important for Ferrari to react and that’s when they decided to swap the drivers, which meant Charles had clear air in front of him to show his true pace. The Monegasque was well in control of the race and looked like he was on course to win the race before Esteban Ocon retired out of the race, bringing out the safety car, which meant all the driver had to be condensed together at the restart.
Safety car means drivers essentially get a free pit stop but, shockingly, Charles Leclerc was not brought in to change to softs unlike everyone else. This left him vulnerable as it took him more time to bring those old and used hard compound tyres up to temperature, which in turn meant that he didn’t only lose the lead but also the other two podium places just like the Monaco GP.

Charles Leclerc said that he “cannot hide his disappointed” after the British GP
Charles Leclerc was quite clearly disappointed as to how things panned out eventually. He said, “We were extremely quick, just the first lap [where Leclerc made contact with Perez at the restart] I thought it was over. I saw the front wing fly off and I was like, ‘that doesn’t look good.”
“But after that, we managed to find the right balance, changed a little bit the tools, changed a little bit the driving and all was looking good for a victory. But obviously with the Safety Car at the end, we decided to leave the lead car out and to pit the [trailing] car, which was myself and Carlos, and it didn’t pay off for me, so it’s a big disappointment.“
“Well done to Carlos Sainz on realizing a childhood dream, you deserve it mate. On my side, I’m incredibly disappointed. Damaged car in lap 1 but we were flying. Great fights on track but I couldn’t do much more having old tyres at the end of the race.”
The championship is slipping away from Charles Leclerc with every passing race. Carlos Sainz might have won the race but he still doesn’t look the finished product. Hence, Ferrari has a decision to make.
