Imola GP might return: City Mayor keeps hopes high, claims dialogue will be resumed ‘at a later time, far from emergency’

The world of Formula One is still reeling from the events that unfolded in the last few days leading up to the cancellation of the much-awaited Imola GP. After the return of the F1 circus to business following their spring break, the fans were witness to two consecutive street races that allowed for negligible overtaking. This is, of course, barring Max Verstappen‘s Miami masterclass where he took on eight opponents to claim the first position after starting from P9.

Protesting against the F1 authority for allowing more street races into the season calendar, fans were eagerly waiting for a Grands Prix which would be at a ‘proper’ F1-grade racing circuit. Thus, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, also known as the Imola GP, turned out to be an immensely anticipated event for all F1 fans. More importantly, this is the home race for Scuderia Ferrari, thus making it all the more special for the Tifosis.

Quashing the hopes of all the fans for an exciting race weekend, the flood conditions in the Emilia Romagna region compelled the F1 authorities to cancel the race. But the Imola GP might be back after some time as the Mayor of Imola said, “At a later time, far from this emergency, we will be able to resume the dialogue between all the subjects involved to continue together in this collaboration that had led us to the Imola Grand Prix.”

Organizing a Formula 1 race is the matter of a massive amount of money, and a Grand Prix as big as the one in Imola is more of a festival than a simple contest between the teams. Thousands of Tifosis were ready to storm the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari with their cheers for the Scuderia–but the weather literally rained on their parade as the race got cancelled.

Speaking on the decision to stall the preparations for the Imola GP, City Mayor Marco Panieri said, “It was unanimously decided not to compete in the Grand Prix out of respect for the situation in which we find ourselves and to allow all the efforts and means of emergency personnel to focus on supporting people in difficulty.”

In other news, several teams had plans to reveal their new upgrades at Imola including Ferrari and Mercedes. But the sudden cancellation of the race has stalled their steps towards attempting to equal Red Bull’s performance. Now, it remains to be seen if they use this extra time to improve upon their setup to get better results and give a steep competition to Red Bull in the upcoming races.
