IndyCar is the toughest field in the world, F1 is a joke, claims Australian racing legend Will Power

While Formula 1 is regarded as the biggest racing franchise in the world, there are many other leagues of motorsports that have garnered immense popularity amongst the fans. One of the foremost racing contests with the biggest fanfare in the United States is IndyCar. With several attempts to capture the American market, Formula 1 is slowly gaining traction across the pond, but some people still feel IndyCar is a better and more competitive field. And according to Australian IndyCar legend Will Power, F1 comes nowhere near to the highest league of single-seater open wheel racing in the USA.

Ever since its commencement in the 1850s, Formula 1 has been viewed as an elitist sport. But, with Liberty Media taking the helm of the franchise, the popularity of the series has gone worldwide. Despite that, most fans are engrossed not in the racing part of Formula 1, but the part that involves the drama and the gossip that go on in the F1 paddock. Speaking on this, Power commented that the pinnacle of motorsports has lost its sheen due to rampant politics amongst the participants, and that, “Formula One’s a joke as far as competition [goes].

While F1 remains as the biggest display of single seater racing in the world, it is quite true that fans might find the competition completely unilateral at times. During the last decade, Mercedes won eight titles in a row, and they seemed completely invincible. So, the contest was between the rest of the cars since the Silver Arrows had already cemented their position at the top of the standings anyway. Now, Red Bull are enjoying the same achievement. They have attained the 2022 World title and are now well on their way for a repeat of their last year’s victory.

While F1 has the twenty best drivers in the world competing for a single Golden Trophy, the packed competition often gives way to some awful drama and politics. Some of the rivals like the one between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, and Niki Lauda and James Hunt, have gone down in F1 history because of their viciousness.

Will Power believes F1 can be elevated to the level of IndyCar. He said, “I think Formula One would be so much better if they had a formula like IndyCar. I love the technology and the manufacturer side of it. I think that’s awesome. But from a spectator watching, man, how cool would it be if everyone had a Red Bull?

While Will Power’s statement regarding the questionable relevance of Formula 1 as a competition when compared to IndyCar might hold true for some viewers, it is an undoubted fact that F1 is the highest league of motorsports in the world. In the upcoming races, fans will only want to see more teams aim for the podiums apart from the top three or four teams that are usually seen at the top.
