“It can swing in the other direction quickly,” Toto Wolff insists Mercedes not complacent about its lack of reliability issues

Toto Wolff has been on the receiving end of one of the worst starts to Mercedes’ season. The problems have been mounting and the German Manufacturer has not been able to find adequate solutions to their issues. Porpoising has been a cause of headache ever since the start of the season and the team had to go running to the FIA to solve their issues as that had become a safety concern for both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

But one thing that has been playing in their favor is the lack of reliability concerns which has allowed them to finish all of the races. Whereas, team at the top like Red Bull and Ferrari have already had their fair share of reliability concerns in just 9 races. Both the championship protagonists, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, have been left frustrated as they have been forced to retire while being in competitive positions.

This is something both the teams have been trying to sort out. But the flip side to this situation is the fact that one of the reasons behind reliability concerns is the fact that the teams are going full throttle and pushing the car to the limit, which isn’t the case with Mercedes. The team from Germany has lacked the pace which has frustrated both their drivers.

But, Toto Wolff understands the fact that Mercedes cannot add on to the problems and that’s why he is not taking lack of reliability concerns for granted. He said, “We’re happy about our reliability. Last year, when we look at how we went with the engine, we had the other phenomenon [and lots of problems]. That’s why I don’t want to get too excited too soon.”

“Reliability is certainly important, as important as the performance, but I don’t think will be the only factor. I think development from now until the end of the season is another one, as is the budget gap, and then reliability finally.”

“The power unit is a completely new design compared to the past, and the problem is because it’s certainly a young project.”

Mercedes needs to keep their feet on the ground as the situation can go from bad to worse in the blink of the eye. Toto Wolff is wary of the concerns and that’s why he is not being complacent.
