“It could be a big thing”: Fernando Alonso is all in for the addition of Mario Andretti’s new team in F1

Some word about a new team being formed by IndyCar legend Michael Andretti has been doing the rounds in the F1 forums for quite some time now. As per the reports, Michael Andretti, who used to drive for McLaren previously, wants to introduce a new American team to the F1 audience by making a bid for a 2024 entry.
Mario Andretti, the only man ever to win the IndyCar, F1 as well as the NASCAR Championships, had revealed the news of the father-son duo’s plan to form an F1 team, earlier this year. Indianapolis-based Andretti Autosports, who already have another base in England, are going to look after the future team’s operations once they begin their journey in F1.

Mario Andretti had also mentioned about a possible deal being reached with Renault for supplying the power unit of their race car.
Fernando Alonso gives his opinion on the entry of Mario Andretti’s team into F1

Currently, there are 20 cars running for 11 teams in F1, a standard number that all the team-owners think is quite healthy. But in the coming years, should Andretti’s team be included in this list, the new addition would take the team count to 11, with 22 cars running on the grid. The last time so many cars ran in F1 was in 2016, before Manor dropped off.
Speaking of the many changes that Andretti’s inclusion would being in F1, Alpine racer Fernando Alonso, who drove for Andretti’s IndyCar team at the Indianapolis 500, said, “Well, sure, it could be a big thing.”
Alonso further said, “I know Michael very well, I know the Andretti family and they are obviously a big part of motorsport in general and they are legends.”
“So if we can have them in Formula 1 that will be the best news, I think for both. Formula 1 would benefit from that and, obviously, Michael and his team will benefit from the sport and from being in Formula 1.”
“I think they have the capabilities, the resources, they have the talent to be in Formula 1 and be competitive as well. So I hope this thing comes true in the next few years, and I will follow very closely.”
