“It is irresponsible to introduce new rules so late…”: Mattia Binotto blasts the FIA over porpoising rule

The ruling that was put forward by the FIA has seen a huge number of rebuttals and protests against it, ever since it was publicly announced. In the current F1 2022 season, the FIA have introduced a host of new regulations, the latest of which is the change proposed by them regarding the porpoising problem. Some other alterations that were given by the FIA include an increment in the budget to keep at par with the market inflation, the increase in weight limit, etc.

Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto has been at the forefront when it comes to the F1 paddocks protesting against the frequent and quite confusing rule changes in the sport. According to the Italian, it makes no sense for the authoritative body of F1 to change a rule this late in the season when we have already had thirteen races before the F1 summer break. After the season resumes, only nine races are remaining, and that will decide this year’s Championship results.

In a conversation with Auto, Motor und Sport, Mattia Binotto gave his opinion on how the FIA should deal with the porpoising issue that has been plaguing teams and drivers alike ever since the beginning of this season. The Italian also expressed his concern regarding the frequent rule changes that the FIA are currently introducing into the sport.

According to Mattia Binotto, the FIA conducted votes while they were introducing the changed rules regarding weight and budget cap. But during the porpoising regulation, no such polls were taken. Binotto said, “With the aerodynamics rules, they wanted to undermine the process under the guise of safety. That is not right. There are no safety problems with the floor. The last races have shown that. It is irresponsible towards the teams to introduce new rules so late in the season for which there is no compelling reason.”

According to the rule that is being put under scrutiny by Mattia Binotto, all the F1 teams must raise the floor of their cars by fifteen millimetres for the 2023 season. They must also raise the diffuser, and the teams must work on the stiffness of the part. Among the top 3 teams in the grid, Ferrari and Red Bull are vehemently against the implementation of these rules while Mercedes, who failed to find a solution to porpoising, are very supportive of the FIA’s decision.
