Christian Horner and Toto Wolff
The last decade of F1 has been dominated by Christian Horner and Toto Wolff with their respective teams. After a decade which saw Ferrari, Renault and McLaren fighting out for the world titles, we saw a change when Red Bull came into their own. Sebastian Vettel emerged from the fog to be become the driver to beat as he went on to claim four consecutive titles spanning from 2010-13.
Mercedes, who were relatively new to the sport, decided to take the plunge and bring in Lewis Hamilton in 2014. The team from Germany didn’t look back from there as they went on secure 7 consecutive drivers’ and constructor’s championship. It was inevitable that Red Bull would make a comeback to challenge Mercedes and that’s what happened in 2021, with the two heavyweights sharing a brilliant championship battle.
Red Bull were there and there about in the last few seasons but it was 2021 when they tightened the screws on Mercedes. Toto Wolff, as Mercedes’ Team Principal, was put to the test for the very first time in his career. We know that Christian Horner is a seasoned campaigner and he showed us that last year when he pulled out all the tricks last season to wind up Toto Wolff. He was partly successful as we saw Toto loses his temper on multiple occasions.

Christian Horner, talking about his rivalry with Toto Wolff, said, “It’s not personal in any way! Toto is Toto. He’s done a phenomenal job with Mercedes. He’s obviously come into the sport from a very different background to me, he’s very much from a financial background.”
“And it’s very easy to pull his chain, and you can see it. Sometimes it affects him. So of course, when you’re competing, and last year was so intense and of course it was the first time he’d ever been in that situation, it’s always interesting to see how people react.“
“And when they’re smashing headphones and so on, you can see that you got to them.”
It will be safe to say that Mercedes has got the better off Red Bull in the last few years. But, even during that period, Christian Horner has found ways to get under Toto’s skin. We would want to see more of this rivalry in the future too.
