“It was a poor translation”: Red Bull Chief Engineer Paul Monaghan attempts to put bandaid on former race engineer’s criticism of Max Verstappen
It has not been long since Max Verstappen‘s very apparent and outright dismissal of team orders to let Sergio Perez pass him at the Sao Paulo GP since the Mexican had more pace. The entire F1 community saw how the Dutchman selfishly stuck to his own position and did not yield to Perez despite having the team orders to do so, disregarding the fact that he has already won the World Championship but Sergio Perez is currently in a tough battle with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to claim the second spot in the WDC.
Following the incident in the Brazilian GP, Max Verstappen has already come under the fire for not being a team player, and a of former Red Bull Head of Race Engineering was even reported to have questioned Max’s technical know-how in a report revealed by Eurosport. As per the news, Guillaume Rocquelin gave an interview on Eurosports’ French-language podcast ‘Les Focus du Volant’, and there, the former Red Bull executive said that Max Verstappen is technically weak.
But in an interview which was held after the Sao Paulo GP, Red Bull’s current Chief Engineer, Paul Monaghan, denied any such comments by Rocquelin, who is now the Head of Red Bull’s Driver Academy. He even claimed it was a “poor translation” of what was said in the French podcast.
Paul Monaghan showers praise on Max Verstappen’s knowledge in the technical aspects of F1
While the F1 world was shocked to see Eurosports’ report about the former Red Bull Head of Race Engineering talk about Max Verstappen‘s lack of technical knowledge, Paul Monaghan clarified that no such words were spoken and that it was actually a shabby translation job since the podcast was in French. He said, “If we may just correct some things. It was a poor translation from an interview from a colleague of mine. So it’s a little bit misquoted.“
Monaghan went ahead to talk about how “Max Verstappen is extremely gifted”. But that does not address the growing distrust in Max’s skills as a team player that has come up in the minds of the F1 fans after the Dutchman refused to yield his position to Sergio Perez, knowing fully well that the Mexican needs every point that he can get right now, to win the second spot in the Championship against Charles Leclerc.
