“It would be absolutely wrong”: Mark Hughes defends Mattia Binotto amidst speculations of him getting ‘sacked’ by Ferrari

While Ferrari had a brilliant start to their 2022 campaign, the hype about the Scuderia soon died down because of their flaws in strategy. Even with a car as fast and steady as the F1-75 and two very talented racers–Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, it seems as if there is an integral part in the team that is going completely wrong at this point. Now that thirteen races are already done with and only nine races remain for this year’s F1 season, the errors that Ferrari have committed that resulted in the sabotage of their own Championship opportunities have become glaringly obvious and some people are even considering that Mattia Binotto might be sacked for this.

With two back-to-back disappointing races at the French Grand Prix and the Hungarian Grand Prix, the flaws in Ferrari’s tactics are quite apparent to the common public. Even though Mattia Binotto has previously denied the possibility that Ferrari’s strategical team needs to be changed, the fans have seen how he stormed out of the pitwall as Ferrari lost to Red Bull in France and Charles Leclerc‘s race got hampered by a DNF.

Now, British F1 commentator Mark Hughes has weighed in on this debate with his take on whether Mattia Binotto should be replaced by someone more capable of leading Ferrari to the success that they deserve.

Under Mattia Binotto’s leadership, Ferrari has only yielded abysmal results in the previous couple of seasons. Although this season, initially, seemed to bring the Maranello outfit some luck in the form of a powerful engine and a fast car, it now appears that Ferrari is headed for yet another upset as Red Bull will almost certainly capture the Constructors’ Championship win this year. Now, fans are wondering if Ferrari’s entire team structure needs to be replaced as there seems to be nothing wrong with their car and their drivers. Yet, the team is failing to yield their expected results.

But British F1 commentator Mark Hughes pointed out that, at this point, sacking Mattia Binotto, and messing with the team structure at the Scuderia would be a mistake. He said, “Sacking the guy in charge is what Ferrari used to do, apart from in the Ross Brawn/Jean Todt era, and it led to a sequence of the team falling ever further and further back, and the whole place operating under a culture of fear. To sack the man in charge because things have gone wrong would be absolutely the wrong way of thinking.”

Thus, it now remains to be seen how the Scuderia react to their slew of disappointing results in the last few races before the summer break. If all goes well, the Tifosi will be expecting a comeback performance from Ferrari in the none remaining races of this season.
