“It’s been a rollercoaster season”: Carlos Sainz describes his topsy-turvy F1 2022 campaign

Carlos Sainz

Carlos Sainz has had a whirlwind of a season so far in the Formula 1 2022 Championship. While the Ferrari recruit, who is in his second year with the team, has seen extreme highs such as his P2 finish at the very first race of this year in Bahrain and his victory at the Silverstone Grand Prix, he has also tasted utter despair when his race in Australia ended in a DNF. In the end, it suffices to say that Carlos Sainz’s Championship campaign in 2022 has been peppered with some great performances and some disappointments as well. So, when he was asked to describe the season in one word, no wonder he chose “exhausting” as the perfect adjective.

But the one thing that the Spaniard can vouch for is the fact that this season has been an incredible learning session for the former McLaren racer. While it has given him many reasons to get upset over his race repeated retirements and disappointing finishes, this season has also taught him to get back up and fight for being the best in the grid. That is how he had won his first Grand Prix at the 150th attempt at the British Grand Prix.

It is apparent that Carlos committed multiple mistakes while getting more settled into his Ferrari F1-75, but he has learnt from every experience and tried to improve. Thus, while going over all that has happened with the Scuderia recruit over the 2022 season, he said that he feels there is chance for him to aim for the Championship in the future seasons as he now knows the limits to his ability and racing skills.

It is no news that Carlos Sainz had a season of ups and downs in 2022, but the Spaniard has said that he learnt something every time he went out to race on the tracks. Speaking of his journey so far in this year’s Championship, he said, “It’s been a rollercoaster season, especially the beginning. But I’d much rather have the rollercoaster being as competitive as I am now than at the beginning.”

And when asked about his chances of winning the World title, he said, “This year, my start of the season put me 50 points behind straight away and it’s difficult to make yourself look like a championship contender when you are minus-50. But if you look closely at the last few races, I am performing at a very similar level to the top guys. I feel like I’m there. It’s just that price I paid at the beginning of the season is costing me this year.

As of now, he has actually finished 9 races and DNF’ed in the rest four, and he has scored podium wins in six out of those 9 GP’s. These are quite favorable statistics considering the troubles he faced with his Ferrari at the beginning of this season.
