“It’s difficult when you can’t live up to expectations”: Franz Tost admits AlphaTauri has underperformed in first half of F1 2022

If the Championship standings are judged carefully, then the team that has put up one of the most upsetting performances this year would be AlphaTauri. Franz Tost, the team principal of Red Bull’s sister team, is of the same opinion as he says he is dejected to see the deterioration in the team’s results in the first half of the 2022 Formula 1 Championship. In the past couple of years, the Italian team had shown great improvement after being rebranded from Toro Rosso. But now, AlphaTauri’s abysmal results have started getting Franz Tost worried.
While the Italian team managed to gather enough pace to finish in the top 10 in the first four races of the season, the problems with their cars started showing soon after that. Pierre Gasly‘s race in Bahrain was hampered by an issue with the battery getting overheated, and Yuki Tsunoda missed a crucial opportunity to score points in Baku as he had to retire from the race as well. All these reliability problems led to AlphaTauri slipping in the points table and they re currently only eighth in the standings with 28 points to their name.
Thus, in a recent interview, Franz Tost admitted that his team has underperformed in the first half of the season. He also said they are looking into ways to improve their car’s race pace and overall performance to score points in the remaining nine GPs of this season.
Franz Tost sheds light on what has gone wrong with AlphaTauri in 2022 so far
In 2020, AlphaTauri debuted in Formula 1 in their new form, and captured the seventh position with 107 points to their name. With Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat as their recruits, the team performed decently in the races, and even got a thunderous Grand Prix victory in Monza with Gasly’s help. And in 2021, they continued their streak of improvement as the team finished in the sixth spot in the points table, leaving behind competitors like Aston Martin and Alfa Romeo.
But this time, AlphaTauri’s position in the Constructors’ Standings do not look too encouraging to their Team Principal. Speaking of the team’s performance so far in F1 2022, Franz Tost said, “The first half did not bring what we had expected. We had a lot of problems, and the reliability was as respected. Everything went smoothly during the tests in Barcelona and Bahrain, but during the first race the battery in Pierre’s car caught fire.”
He also said, “It’s always difficult when you can’t live up to expectations. I hope we can get everything back on track for the second half of the season.”
