“It’s not NFL, stop this bull****” : F1 fans furious as drivers wear football helmets during the award ceremony at Miami GP
The Miami GP was a spectacle to watch through and through, and even now that it is over, F1 Twitter cannot get enough of all that went down during the three hours of the race. In latest reports, it seems that Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Carlos Sainz‘s little gesture of wearing an NFL helmet to the podium to receive their awards for the race has irked some of the viewers and they are speaking out against it on social media.
Miami is home to the Miami Dolphins, one of the foremost NFL teams and the Dolphins have their games at the Hard Rock Stadium, which is just a stone’s throw from the Miami International Autodrome Circuit, where we got to see the Miami Grand Prix today. So, throughout the weekend, many references were made to the Superbowl, a sensational sports league in the US.
Leading up to the Miami GP, Pierre Gasly said that the vibe during the weekend matched that of the Super Bowl as the authorities in charge of the race had made sure the event was as grand as fans could imagine. Then, Lando Norris dropped images of his helmet which was shaped like a football, to pay homage to the NFL again. And even after the race had ended, the podium winners decided to wear an NFL helmet to the stage, a gesture that many Twitter users have found to be quite bizzare.
Twitter users say Charles, Max and Carlos should have gone without the NFL helmet on the stage at the Miami GP
Many of the Twitter users did not like the fact that time and again, the NFL references were being made in F1, which is an elite sport on its own. So, some of the users said, “Please stop this weird circus from happening again. We are here for the F1.”

For some other fans of Formula 1, the top 3 drivers wearing an NFL helmet on the podium was a hilarious situation. They exclaimed, “America making sure f1 is turning into a meme because what are these helmets!!”
Max: you know they’re gonna make us wear American football helmets on the podium, right?
Charles: WTF? ?
Carlos: Dude, I think he’s serious.#MiamiGP #F1 pic.twitter.com/gXOOQ1MlvJ— ?? Em (@MLEZoe1) May 8, 2022

With such reactions from the offended F1 fans who do not want their favourite sport to get buried under the glitz and glam of NFL, it is clear that the references to NFL that were made by many drivers during the Miami GP, were not well received at all.
