Jack Nicholls compares Charles Leclerc’s “spinning from the lead of the race” to Vettel’s Hockenheim error in 2018
Ferrari’s only Championship hope Charles Leclerc lost out on a whopping 25 points after he crashed into the sidewall at Circuit Paul Ricard towards the very end of the French Grand Prix. At a stage where Ferrari is locked in a vicious Championship battle with Red Bull, the Scuderia simply could not have made a single error as every point is crucial for them, but still, Charles Leclerc lost control on the throttle and he could not do anything as his F1-75 slammed into the sidewall while the Monegasque was guaranteed a much-needed race win.
For any F1 racer, a Grand Prix victory is a moment to be celebrated and cherished, but for Charles Leclerc, it is so much more than that as it would have helped him narrow down the gap that has formed between him and Max Verstappen in the Championship table. But despite earning a brilliant pole position on Saturday, Leclerc’s luck gave up on him during the Main Race and he had to DNF from the French GP because of extensive damage to his car.
Jack Nicholls compares Charles Leclerc’s mistake in France with Sebastian Vettel’s mistake in Hockenheim in 2018
Formula 1 commentator Jack Nicholls had watched the incident at the French Grand Prix carefully and he said he found similarities between Charles Leclerc’s crash and a costly error that Sebastian Vettel had made while the German was in Ferrari in 2018. Stressing the importance of carrying a consistent form right from the beginning of the race till the very end, Jack Nicholls said that it would prove costly for the Monegasque in the Championship run. The crash handed Max Verstappen a 26-point advantage over Leclerc, and it also gave him an obvious benefit regarding the Championship win too.
Speaking about the incident during his BBC podcast, Jack Nicholls said, “It’s up there with Vettel crashing out in Hockenheim all those years ago in the rain and, honestly, spinning from the lead of the race in the bone dry is so, so rare, because I remember we had this conversation when Vettel spun out.”
