Former Mercedes engineer James Vowles is all set to leave the F1 team that he has spent 20 years of his motorsports career for the post of Team Principal at Williams. The news of his leave from the Stuttgart-based team went public only yesterday, and Vowles has already taken the F1 world by storm. Since this was a very unprecedented move and none of the fans had any air of it, everyone is asking for how long James Vowles had been having talks with Williams. Thus, in a recent interview, Vowles laid bare all the details for the F1 enthusiasts to find out.
The Williams F1 team has been lagging at the very back of the grid for quite a few years now since they have been plagued with financial issues. Even though their acquisition by Dorilton Capital saw some improvement in the team’s monetary situation, not much has changed with regard to their results. In the recently-concluded 2022 season of Formula 1, Williams got the last position in the World Constructors’ Championship standings with only 8 points to their name.
As James Vowles is making the move to Williams to take their reigns as the Team Principal, everyone is now expecting him to get the squad back to their winning ways. But for this, James needs to have knowledge of the team’s current condition and according to the Briton, he is actually taking up his new role without much clue of where Williams stands right now. He admitted that he has not stepped foot inside the team yet and he is still in the “transition process”, so he cannot comment on which sectors need more work for Williams to become successful again.

James Vowles says his contact with the team that hired him as their leader “has been fairly limited”

In 2017, the Williams F1 Racing Team was still in the fifth position in the Championship standings–ahead of teams like Renault, McLaren and Toro Rosso. But only a year later, in 2018, they were down in the second last position, only above Sauber, and in 2019, they came last. This steady dip in Williams’ growth curve has been worrying for everyone inside the team, and now that James Vowles is set to become their Team Principal, he needs to know which sectors need the most work.
Speaking on where he believes Williams went completely wrong in the previous seasons, James Vowles said, “It’s hard to answer what’s wrong simply because as I speak to you all here, I haven’t set foot inside. My contact has been fairly limited, for purposeful reasons, I’m still in the transition point.“
Only a month and a half remain before the 2023 season of Formula 1 starts with full force, and James Vowles needs complete knowledge of his team’s statistics before that time. Now, it only remains to be seen if the Briton succeeds in learning of all of Williams’ shortcomings and correcting them within this short period of time so that the team gets back to their winning ways in 2023 or not.
