Max Verstappen has been very vocal about his dislike for social media and it’s effects ever since Verstappen and his family became targets of social media abuse and toxicity after he refused to let teammate Sergio Perez by in the 2021 Brazilian Grand Prix. The Double World Champion prefers to live his life away from the public eye and rarely ever posts about subjects unrelated to racing.
While Verstappen enjoys anonymity away from the race track, his girlfriend Kelly Piquet is quite the social media buff, boasting a following of over 1.1 Million on instagram. Piquet is the daughter of 3 time Formula One World Champion, Nelson Piquet. Kelly is also a Model, internet celebrity and Public Relations professional.
Although Piquet relies heavily on her online presence for her profession, Verstappen believes, she has decreased her use of social media since the pair started dating. Notably, Piquet’s last social media post was 2 weeks ago when she shared her cover pictures for the January edition of Vogue Netherlands. While the Brazilian socialite continues to upload stories ever so often for her followers, she has undoubtedly reduced her activity in the past year.
Max Verstappen confirms he will stop posting online once he retires
In a recent interview with De Limburger, Verstappen revealed he does not like using social media and enjoys his privacy, away from the outside world. “I just don’t have that need to show my private life to the outside world.” he said. “Kelly also does it much less than before.” Verstappen commented. The Dutch driver has a social media handler who handles all his profiles.
Verstappen also shared that he will stop posting on social media once he retires from racing. ” If I’m ever done with Formula 1, I don’t see myself posting very much after that. I just don’t like it. Some people don’t do anything else all day , I do other things. For example, I spend a lot of time on my phone, but that is more to arrange things around my sim team.” Verstappen said in reference to his sim racing team, Team Redline.
Former Formula One driver Sebastian Vettel also was a long time adversary to social media but eventually joined instagram in 2021 to announce his retirement and spread awareness about real world issues. While Verstappen’s departure from Formula One is still many years away, eventually losing all sense of contact with the Red Bull driver will be a tough pill to swallow for his impassioned fans.
