The F1 calendar is expanding left, right and center, and Max Verstappen has expressed his desire to add South African GP to the calendar. The reigning world champion recently won the inaugural Miami GP which cemented his second place, 19 points behind the championship leader, Charles Leclerc. We all are well aware of the FIA’s intentions to make the sport as popular as ever after the kind of success it achieved last year.

This rich man’s sport is quickly becoming equally popular amongst youth. Of course, the Netflix series, ‘Drive to Survive’, has played an integral part in expanding his viewers but the series wouldn’t have been as exciting as it was if we didn’t have the kind of dramatic season we had last year. We saw a battle for the ages which ended up with Max Verstappen winning his first ever title after defeating Lewis Hamilton.

But that did under controversial circumstances and also at the last lap of the race which added to the spice of the whole incident. Of course, Max Verstappen was the winner of the duel but the actual winner was F1 whose popularity skyrocketed after what happened in Abu Dhabi and for that matter, throughout the length of the season. That was also an opportunity for the organization to take the sport to another level.

That’s the sole reason why we had the first Miami GP which was a huge success, marketing wise. On a sporting level, a lot of changes need to be made. Recently Max Verstappen was asked about where he would like to race. He said, “I’d like to race in Africa. So Kyalami would be a cool addition,” as reported by gpblog.

Lewis Hamilton also had previously said, “The place that I really feel is dear to my heart and most important for me is to get a race back in South Africa.”

“I think there is a great following out there and I think it would be great to be able to highlight just how beautiful the motherland is.”

The sport is continuously becoming more exciting but it is equally important for the organization to keep the traditional races intact while they look to expand the F1 calendar.
