“Lack of pace made everything complicated”: Sergio Perez speaks out publicly for the first time since ugly fight with Max in Brazil GP

Sergio Perez
The Brazilian GP at the Interlagos Circuit was the first race of this season in which everyone at the Red Bull garage seemed truly unnerved because of the sudden show of pace by Mercedes. Throughout the weekend in Sao Paulo, the Silver Arrows established their dominance in the scoring table with a string of brilliant performances from both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. The 2022 Merc debutant even went on to win the Sprint race on Saturday, cementing potition at the top of the starting grid for the Main Race.
As the Main Race started, George got off to an easy lead, and Max Verstappen had to overtake Carlos Sainz to claim the second spot. During the run in Sao Paulo, Verstappen collided with Lewis Hamilton during a wheel-to-wheel and that caused considerable damage to his car. He dropped to the back of the grid and could hardly recover as he finished the race in P6.

Max Verstappen’s result shows that Red Bull was not as accurate with their strategy as they have been at the other Grands Prix this year. Later, Sergio Perez commented that Mercedes’ speed caused the cracks in Red Bull’s tactics. Fans were also alarmed at the heated exchange between Max Verstappen and his engineer who wanted the Dutchman to yield his position to teammate Sergio Perez as the Mexican had more pace.
Following up on all of this, Checo decided to release a statement the next day as he spoke about all that went wrong during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez indicates he had a deep discussion about team dynamics with Max Verstappen

At the very end of the Brazilian Grand Prix, when it was almost certain that Max Verstappen’s RB-18 did not have any more pace in it due to the massive damage that it had sustained from the earlier collision with Hamilton’s Mercedes, Sergio Perez wanted Max to let him pass, so that he can bring more points for the team. But as his engineer directed Max Verstappen to yield his position to Perez, the Dutchman straight away defied all team orders and refused to budge.
This made all the Formula 1 fans aware of the toxic team dynamics prevalent in Red Bull, where Max Verstappen always gets the priority as compared with Sergio Perez. But Checo cleared everything up with his statement, “A safe podium with a lack of pace made everything complicated for us with the SC. Now to focus on Abu Dhabi. With Max and the team everything was discussed yesterday and it will remain internally, this is behind us and we will continue working as the great team that we have been until now.”
Now, it remains to be seen if Red Bull brings on the fight to Mercedes as the Stuttgart-based team suddenly seems quite strong now that the season’s finale is coming up.
