“Lacking these two- or three-tenths,” Toto Wolff perturbed with Mercedes struggling to battle with Red Bull and Ferrari

Toto Wolff was commonly pleased after a 3-4 finish in the Austrian GP after the struggles they went through at the start of the season. Mercedes have been very consistent with the cars and the reliability, awarding them with every lucky position they could end up with. But Toto still isn’t happy with the pure pace his cars are giving him and is convinced to stick behind Ferrari and Red Bull with a few tenths to gain.

Mercedes struggled with a lot of porpoising at the start of the season, they barely managed to keep their car on the ground in Monaco and Baku. But after the upgrades in Spain and Silverstone, the silver arrows seemed to have gained a lot more pace and performance. They managed to bring out quick laps with a few timing being the quickest ones.

“When you look at the result, and motorsport is results-driven, so P3 and P4 is OK,” Toto Wolff said after the race in Austria.
“But we’re still lacking these two- or three-tenths in performance. Overall, the car was much quicker today. But [the team is] not quick enough to really challenge for the front yet, ” explained Toto.

Mercedes struggled on Saturday to keep up their cars on the top but they were clearly better in the main race. Toto was convinced having a fast car on the track that doesn’t really suit the Mercedes has been proved after the return in 2014.

“This is never a happy track for us in Austria,” Wolff said.
“From that perspective, I’m OK with how it went. In a way, on Saturday [in the sprint] we were really stuck in no man’s land. I think on Sunday, maybe stuck in no man’s land from the positioning on the track, but the lap times were at least competitive. On Saturday we were losing half a second every single lap, ” Toto said as a positive from the weekend.

Mercedes are 122 points off the top and are set to break their record of 8 consecutive titles over the last eight years. But as of the troubles, this season 2022 won’t be the season for the team to win another title.
