Aston Martin surpassed expectations at the start of the 2023 F1 season. The Silverstone-based team was the second-fastest team behind the dominant Red Bull Racing. However, the British team fell behind its rivals in result rounds and lost significant ground. Now, Lance Stroll has admitted that the AMR23 needs a major upgrade.
The Canadian driver acknowledged the team’s good start to the season. Although, Stroll accepted that the Silverstone-based team has struggled to match its competitors in the past few rounds. Mercedes managed to get ahead of Aston Martin in the Constructors’ championship earlier this year. He told Racefans, “A lot of the teams caught up so it’s much tighter now.”
Lance Stroll highlighted that the British team was in dire need of upgrades that could help reclaim its spot in the standings. The Canadian driver explained, “We really just have to keep pushing and try and make another step in the second half of the season to get back to that really competitive car that we had at the beginning of the year.”

Lance Stroll is far behind teammate Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso made a shock switch to Aston Martin from Alpine this season. However, the Spanish driver’s gamble seemed to have paid off. Alonso secured multiple podiums in the first few rounds of the year. The two-time world champion remains third in the Drivers’ championship despite the recent downturn in results.
On the other hand, Alonso’s teammate Lance Stroll has failed to secure the same results. The Canadian driver has not achieved a single podium finish this season while having one of the faster cars on the grid. Stroll sits ninth in the standings, even behind McLaren’s Lando Norris. The 24-year-old’s lackluster performances have hindered Aston Martin’s championship position.
Thus, Lance Stroll believes that Aston Martin needs to make a major step up in performance throughout the 2023 season. The Silverstone-based team needs to recover from its recent fall in the pecking order to achieve its targets for this year. Although, it remains to be seen if the British team can extract more pace from the AMR23 this season.
