McLaren had a disappointing start to their 2023 season that saw them going pointless for multiple races before gradually returning to the top and re-establishing themselves as one of the top three teams, Lando Norris and his team on the back of the impressive double podium at Suzuka last Sunday, and has proclaimed that with just a 49 points gap to Aston Martin, they are coming for it.

Fernando Alonso was the only team to give a reasonable challenge to Red Bull at the start of the season. But they were soon out-developed by Ferrari and Mercedes. Now McLaren is close to knocking them out of the top 5. With six more races this season and considering Lance Stroll’s poor form, the champion team has a genuine shot at overtaking AMR.

Fernando Alonso, in the pre-event press conference before the Qatar GP, said that McLaren has become a little overconfident. He said, as reported by autosport.com, “I think they were both [Norris and Oscar Piastri] close to being on the podium, and they were struggling a little bit. So, it’s good if they are overconfident”

Norris quickly responded to this and pointed out that Alonso’s claims that his team is overconfident are wrong. He said, refuting the world champion’s claim, “He says that we’re getting too confident? We scored over 20 [33 in reality] points this weekend. But I don’t think we’re overconfident in any way.”

Norris seemed slightly offended by Alonso’s comments, and he said that “unless his maths is deteriorating, which it definitely isn’t… Fernando is just Fernando”. He also said that he makes himself look very good or others very bad.

McLaren racers thought they were way too behind Aston Martin, but now, after a few good races, they finally have a feeling that they could potentially catch onto Aston Martin in the Constructors Cup with still six races to go. They just need more podiums, as commented by Norris.

Norris claims Alonso is not a silly guy by saying, “But he’s a smart guy, he’s not silly in any way. So, I’m confident we can do it [ overtake Aston Martin in points].” Things are finally catching up for McLaren. They are hopeful of a bright weekend at the Qatar GP this weekend.
