The seven-time world champion’s qualifying experience during the evening of March 1st wasn’t good. It was quite the opposite of his teammate George Russell, who finished third behind Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc in the top-3. Quite taken aback by the car’s performance in the practice sessions, Lewis Hamilton could only manage a ninth place on the grid for qualifying.
Lewis Hamilton claims that he changed the setup of his Mercedes F1 car, which is what caused his unsatisfactory qualifying performance for the Bahrain Grand Prix. Hamilton stated that he wasn’t satisfied with his race pace which led him to make the car change, where he had hoped for having a better race pace. While talking to the media about the same he said,
Yesterday was really good, George and I were on the same set ups, then he went left and I went right and I think right was definitely not good for a single lap. But I felt more comfortable with more fuel so I hope that reflects tomorrow.Lewis Hmilton said.
Hamilton was also asked why it seemed like his car was bottoming out a lot, but he maintained that most drivers experienced the same problem. According to him, it was just a tough qualifying for him. Hamilton is confident in Mercedes’ chances even though his qualifying performance displeased him because he thinks their updated W15 is a big improvement over its previous model.
The Mercedes team principal wishes Lewis Hamilton to add his eighth win while still being part of the team
Ever since the news of Lewis Hamiton’s move to Ferrari in 2025 came to light, the Mercedes team principal has one and only one goal, for Hamilton to win his eighth championship while still being part of the team. According to his teammate George Russell, even the new W15 is built while keeping Hamilton’s needs in mind.
But there is a bit of a twist to the story, While Toto Wolff does want Hamilton to win another championship with the team, he also wishes him to regret it as soon as he leaves the team. Toto Wolff jokingly stated, of course, that he wishes for Hamilton to have this win since he deserves it, plus they could close this ‘painful chapter’. But then he would regret leaving Mercedes as they provided him with the fastest car.
Of course, it was a joke made on a possibility. But the team principal who is still somewhat bitter about the whole move to another team situation, would internally want it to happen. If Hamilton does end up winning the eighth world championship with Mercedes and after he moves to Ferrari, and fails to bring the same results he might feel remorse for leaving Mercedes.
