Lewis Hamilton is undoubtedly one of the all-time greats in Formula 1 history. The 38-year-old has shattered dozens of records in his stint with Mercedes. However, the 7-time champion’s contract will end this season. The Briton has stated his faith in continuing with the Silver Arrows despite rumors of a potential move to Ferrari. Reports allege that Hamilton wants a five-year contract with the Brackley-based team.
Previously it was believed that the 38-year-old was willing to stay in the sport for several seasons. Although per a source close to the British driver, it seems Lewis wants to race until he is at least 43 years old, with a total sum of £250 Million ($320 Million). The source stated, ‘Lewis wants five years, and if it were just a one-year extension I don’t think he’d accept it.’
This is a massive surprise to the paddock, as Hamilton had stated his intentions of having a journey outside F1 when he retires. Perhaps the 7-time world champion is willing to postpone his other endeavors. The reported amount is $120 million more than his arch-rival Max Verstappen’s Net worth ($200 Million), the top earner on the grid.

Lewis Hamilton might need to compromise with Mercedes
The source mentioned that such a demand might not be easily met by Toto Wolff. Mercedes have already selected George Russell as its long-term focus once Hamilton retires or leaves for another team. As such, Russell has been open to being paired with the 7-time world champion for the short term. However, the 25-year-old would not want to stay in Lewis’ shadow for another half a decade.
Mercedes are yet to come to terms with Hamilton’s demands. However, it has been said that money is not a delaying factor. With the Silver Arrows ready to spend the desired amount to keep its star driver. As such, it lies on Toto to negotiate with Lewis for a shorter extension period or perhaps make a major shift in the team’s plans for the long term.
Thus, Lewis Hamilton still has the hunger to thrive in Formula 1. The 38-year-old is willing to stay for another five seasons as he tries to break the record for the most F1 world championships. However, it remains to be seen whether the Silver Arrows agree with his demands and whether George Russell can live alongside Lewis for such a long time.
