Lewis Hamilton is a 7-time F1 world champion. The British driver was in the battle to win an unprecedented eighth title in 2021 but lost to Max Verstappen in the controversial season finale in Abu Dhabi. Hamilton and Mercedes were far from happy with decisions made by race control during the Grand Prix. Toto Wolff has claimed that more support was provided to the 38-year-old after that race.

Wolff believed Hamilton and Mercedes did not get enough recognition for dominating Formula 1 in the turbo hybrid era. The Briton won six world titles between 2014 and 2020, with the Silver Arrows bagging seven consecutive teams’ championships. However, things changed after Max Verstappen came out on top in Abu Dhabi. Soymotor.com quotes Wolff, “We started to have more support from that moment, people started to support us more and that is still positive for us today.”

The Mercedes boss believed the German team and Lewis Hamilton would’ve accepted losing the title fair and square to the Dutch driver. However, it was the handling of the Abu Dhabi GP that made Wolff allege that Verstappen stole Hamilton’s title. The 51-year-old continued, “It’s still something that bothers you. If it had happened cleanly, we would have admitted it right away, but the fact that it was stolen made it more complicated.”

Toto Wolff admitted that he and Hamilton had no choice but to get over the incidents in Abu Dhabi. The 49-year-old was glad to complement the 7-time world champion as the two spent time together to overcome the title loss. Moreover, the Austrian was happy to be content now. He explained, “It is what it is, worse things happen in the world than having a Formula 1 World stolen.”

Hamilton lost out on the 2021 world title on the last lap of the last race to Max Verstappen. The Dutchman overtook the 7-time world champion on the final lap after a late safety car. This in turn, allowed Verstappen to make an easy pass with fresh tires on the Briton. With F1 being riddled with controversies after this dramatic race.

Thus, Toto Wolff claimed that Lewis Hamilton received more support from fans after the 2021 title decider. The 7-time world champion went through a tough period after the Abu Dhabi GP and needed time off to get over the incident. As such, it seems that Hamilton was in the minds of millions of fans who wanted to support the Mercedes driver.
