‘Lewis wouldn’t have won anyway’: Toto Wolff’s latest admission about the Dutch GP will be a ‘tough pill to swallow’ for Lewis Hamilton
Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton
A race which could ended up with a win for Lewis Hamilton actually ended with heartbreak and despair. The seven time world champion was close to registering his first win of the season but, unfortunately, could not even manage to get on the podium. Zandvoort, just like Hungaroring, was one of the circuits which suited the design of the W-13. The Mercedes challenger came into its own on a circuit full of medium speed corners.
Despite of the all the positives, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen still remained the driver to beat. The Dutchman started the race on softs while Lewis had a set of mediums. The thought behind this choice was catch Red Bull by surprise by pulling off a one stopper. 2 stopper looked like the way to go at the start of the race but the perception changed when the hard set of tyres proved to be faster than expected.
Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff wanted to stretch the stint on the mediums for as long as possible and then put on the hards to go it a proper go at a race. The safety car definitely ruined Mercedes’ chance to execute a well thought out plan. But, Toto Wolff, after seeing how the race went by, had a different opinion which will raise a lot of eyebrows in the paddock.
Toto Wolff’s latest statement will be a kick in the gut for Lewis Hamilton
Toto Wolff, in a recent interview, explained that Max would have overtaken Lewis by the end of the race in a normal situation too. He said, “The bitterness would be very big if we were racing for a championship. Then of course you think to yourself: on Saturday Perez is in the gravel and on Sunday Tsunoda parks his car outside.”
“Without the virtual safety car we might have had a fifty per cent chance, because Max would have come out just under ten seconds behind us.“
When asked about what would have happened in an ideal situation, he said, “Would we have won? Probably not.”
Lewis Hamilton is one of the most competitive drivers on the track, which would make it even harder for him to digest such a pessimistic statement by his Team boss. It seems like that the two might have some talking to do ahead of the Italian GP.
