REPORT: Logan Sargeant a candidate to replace Nicholas Latifi at Williams for 2023

Formula 1’s silly season is truly afoot. Sebastian Vettel’s retirement has provoked a domino effect in the market – Fernando Alonso promptly left Alpine for Aston Martin to replace him, leaving Alpine with a headache, as they had not been informed. They tried to put Oscar Piastri into the seat – and that has failed rather spectacularly, and he is looking at a McLaren seat for 2023.

While Alpine have a few options, such as a potential return of Daniel Ricciardo, or perhaps they will go for an all-French lineup with Pierre Gasly, it will definitely be interesting to see what ends up happening. One thing that was apparently supposed to happen was Oscar Piastri moving to Williams in 2023 for a loan year, as Alpine did not want to let Fernando Alonso go.

It has not particularly worked out for either team. While Alex Albon’s contract has been extended, Williams were reported to be looking into replacing Nicholas Latifi after a series of disappointing performances. But the Piastri option has pretty much been thrown out of the window now, so they must turn to other options. One of them is Logan Sargeant.

What are the goals for Logan Sargeant to meet?

Currently, Logan Sargeant is 3rd in the Formula 2 standings, some way behind championship leader Felipe Drugovich and second-placed Théo Pourchaire. The American driver was forced to sit out F2 in 2021 due to financial issues, even though he provided very stiff competition to Oscar Piastri and Pourchaire in F3.

But Sargeant is having a pretty good debut campaign – and is currently 31 points ahead of teammate Liam Lawson. While it may be a little too late for the championship, Sargeant is still in contention for a Formula 1 seat next year to replace Nicholas Latifi, as reported by F1fall.

Even if Latifi may not be replaced by Sargeant – or even next year, it is still obvious that he needs to improve his performance by a lot. Latifi has been able to keep up with his teammates in the past sometimes (George Russell and Alex Albon) but he is yet to do so consistently. A top 5 finish for Logan Sargeant would give enough super license points for Formula 1, but there are other things he’ll need to do.

The first thing would be able to convince Williams’ team principal, Jost Capito, who has previously said that it would likely be a mistake to rush Sargeant into Formula 1. Indeed, F1 is very competitive and unforgiving, and even though performance in F2 or junior classes doesn’t always translate into success in F1, it is a good indicator.

It is rather obvious that Williams need to replace Latifi, be it Sargeant, or someone else that takes his place. It will be interesting to see what Williams decide to go through with, or if Latifi can improve his performance and convince the bosses. Sargeant will certainly be watching on keenly.
