“Many, many problems,” Felipe Massa lambasts Ferrari flaws in 2022

“Many, many problems,” Felipe Massa lambasts Ferrari flaws in 2022

When the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz started off their Championship campaign at the season-opening race at the Bahrain Grand Prix, their brilliant 1-2 finish gave all the fans the impression that the Scuderia were in for some great results in 2022. But as the season progressed, Ferrari‘s image as the initial Championship favorites fell apart since Red Bull left them behind and grabbed the top spot in the World Championship Standings. And according to Felipe Massa, several other problems besides from Ferrari’s strategy are to be blamed for their poor results.

Felipe Massa is one of Ferrari’s most popular recruits ever, and he has also served as the partner to the legendary seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher. Thus, it can undoubtedly be said that the Brazilian knows a thing or two about how the Scuderia can get to the top of the Constructors’ Championship list. And according to him, there are “many, many problems” that have resulted in Ferrari settling for the second place in the Standings as Red Bull surpassed them with superior speed, strategy, and performance in 2022.

In a recent interview with Polish news reporter Roksana Ćwik, Felipe Masa talked about his F1 career, driving with motorsports greats such as Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso, and so about how he believes Ferrari need to back Charles Leclerc on his quest for the World Championship. During the conversation, Ćwik asked the question regarding Felipe Masa’s opinions on Ferrari’s change as the last time he had been with the Scuderia was almost 15 years back. And Felipe Massa agreed that almost every time, Ferrari make the same mistakes which cause them to lose out on the Championship win despite getting too close to it.

Felipe Massa says Charles is doing a fantastic job, no matter Ferrari’s flaws

Felipe Massa

As a Ferrari racer who came too close to winning the World Championship and still lost out on it in the epic Grand Finale of the 2008 F1 season, Felipe Massa knows exactly how it feels to be in Charles Leclerc’s place. Just like Massa lost his title to Hamilton in 2008, Charles Leclerc was also crowned as the initial Championship favorite in 2022, but later on, lost the lead to Verstappen.

Speaking on how Charles can achieve the title that Ferrari have been chasing for 15 long years, Massa said, “I think Charles is doing a fantastic job. He’s a great driver, he really deserves to be in a competitive car. He deserves to have the opportunity to fight for the championship as a driver. But yeah, I think they need to fix the problem. They need to improve the things that are not working – on the strategy but also on so many other things. They have mechanical issues at the beginning of the season. They had problems in the pit stop, many, many problems in the strategy.

In the upcoming 2023 season, Ferrari will be entering the field with an entirely new leadership as Mattia Binotto has stepped down and Frederic Vasseur will be replacing him. Now, it remains to be seen how the Frenchman brings about the required changes in the Scuderia so that they can finally get back to their winning ways and bring the Constructors’ Championship home to Maranello after 15 long years.
